Mindful Recovery

Teachers: Laurie Cousins, BA and Mary Ann Rege, MA

This 8 week course is designed to bring practices of mindful awareness to individuals who suffer from the addictive trappings and tendencies of the mind. Modeled after Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for depression and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction, Mindful Recovery tackles the very roots of addictive behavior by targeting two of the main predictors of relapse: negative emotions and cravings.

Mindful Recovery practices are intended to foster increased awareness of triggers, destructive habitual patterns, and “automatic” reactions that seem to control many of our lives. The mindfulness practices are also designed to help you learn to pause, observe your present experience, and bring awareness to the range of choices in every moment. You will learn to respond in ways that serve you, rather than react in ways that can be detrimental to your well being.

The primary goals of Mindful Recovery are:

1. Develop awareness of personal triggers and habitual reactions, and learn ways to create a pause in this seemingly automatic process.

2. Change your relationship to discomfort, learning to recognize challenging emotional and physical experiences and responding to them in skillful ways.

3. Cultivate a nonjudgmental, compassionate approach toward yourself and your experience.

4. Establish a lifestyle that supports both a mindfulness practice and long-term recovery.

5. Build resiliency, flexibility, choice, and freedom.

In Mindful Recovery, we work to reduce reactive behaviors. We pay attention to the experience of cravings and urges and how, for so many of us, those can automatically lead to impulsive behavior.

This class is designed for individuals in recovery for addictive behaviors (substances, food, relationships, sex, internet, etc.) and those inspired to bring renewal to their recovery through mindfulness.
